Directions

0/0 steps made
  1. Pre-heat oven to 180C.
  2. Pour the milk in a pan and add sugar. Bring to a boil, stirring so it doesn’t overflow.
  3. Take off the heat when the sugar has dissolved. Set aside to cool.
  4. Cut the bread into squares.
  5. In a frying pan melt the butter and fry/toast the bread. You can choose to crumble the bread into small pieces if you want.
  6. In a mixing bowl, beat together the eggs, cooled milk, and vanilla essence.
  7. Layer the fried bread in an oven-proof baking dish. Pour the milk-egg mixture in.
  8. Place the baking fish in a water bath in the oven. (see note)
  9. Bake for 35-40 mins (but I would suggest checking the done-ness at the 30 minute mark).

Note:

  • A “water bath” is a pan of hot water placed in the oven into which you put the baking dish that contains the food you need to cook. The hot water helps keep the temperature surrounding the food more consistent.
